Let’s discuss the common application problems and solutions with industrial powder coating.

Color Contamination

This is a very common problem with powder coatings and one that can be fairly easily avoided. While it is a good practice to reuse powder coatings, you need to make sure that you do so carefully and have your materials secured and packaged until you need to use them again.

Cross-contamination can happen easily with different powder colors, and if cross-contaminated powders are applied to metal surfaces the colors will likely be off. You also want to make sure that you do housekeeping as you change colors and clean all of the equipment before the application.

Unprepared Surfaces

Powder coating is an adhesive that is applied through a process called ESD or electrostatic spray deposition. The attraction of the powder to the metal surface is what causes the powder to charge and stick, so it’s really important for the surface of the metal to be cleaned and prepared for the powder. If the surface isn’t sand blasted or chemically cleaned in any way, then the product might not properly activate and stick to the metal.

Coating Defects

There are a number of possible defects with a powder coating product. This can include uneven surface texture known as “orange peel”, cracking, catering, blistering, peeling, and a number of other defects that won’t occur until after the application. While some of these defects are caused by errors in the application process, others are less preventable. Not only will powder coating experts know how to properly handle all of the steps of the application process, they will also know the remedies for defects in the coating and will be able to fix these issues.

Incorrect Application Technique

While this isn’t a problem with the product itself, using the incorrect application technique is a very common problem with powder coatings. This is one of the major benefits of hiring experts for their powder coating services. Experience coating professionals like those at QLP will make sure the coating is applied properly every time.

Fireproof Coatings

One of the best things that you can do for your building is use an intumescent coating. These paint coatings became popularized after the World Trade Center buildings fell in the 9/11 terror attacks. Accidents, malfunctioning equipment, and unfortunately even terror attacks can happen and cause buildings to go up in flames quickly when the walls are coated with regular paint. Intumescent paint coatings allow you an extra two hours to get people safely out of a building due to its fireproof properties. Use these paints on your walls, equipment, and even your products.
