Beyond the Surface: Why Coating Prep Is 90% of the Job in Denver’s Climate

When you add dry air, seasonal moisture shifts, and concrete that behaves differently at high altitude than it does at sea level, surface prep stops being a “recommendation.” It becomes the foundation of the entire system.

Concrete often contains trapped moisture that moves upward over time. If an epoxy floor is installed without proper testing, moisture can push the coating right off the slab. We perform calcium chloride or relative humidity (RH) testing on every project. These tests tell us what is happening inside the slab, not just what the surface looks like.

Skipping this step is the fastest way to shorten a floor system’s lifespan. Proper prep means confirming the slab is ready before a single gallon of product leaves the truck.

The Mile High UV Factor and Outdoor Assets

UV exposure at 5,280 feet is significantly more damaging than at sea level. This matters for outdoor tanks, steel structures, and loading docks.

In Northern Colorado, coatings applied without the proper anchor profile and UV-stable topcoats will chalk and fade prematurely. Correct prep ensures the primer bonds so tightly that the UV-resistant topcoat can do its job without the risk of lifting.
