Intumescent Coating

Intumescent coatings are specialized fire-resistant coatings designed to help protect structural components from fire damage. When exposed to high temperatures, the coating expands and forms a thick, insulating char layer. This barrier slows heat transfer to the underlying substrate, helping the assembly maintain its load-bearing capacity for the period required by the specified fire-resistance system.

How intumescent coatings work

The coating system contains components that react together under heat to create a stable char. Because intumescent material can be applied as a comparatively thin architectural finish, it is often selected when structural steel must remain visible while still meeting passive fire-protection requirements.

Common coating types

  • Water-based systems: low-odor, lower-VOC options commonly used for compatible interior and selected exterior assemblies.
  • Solvent-based systems: durable systems used where the approved specification calls for greater environmental or moisture tolerance.
  • Epoxy intumescent systems: robust coatings used for demanding industrial, marine and high-risk environments.
